Johnny Lonergan Memorial Festival of Rugby

Thursday 30th March 2023, was a hugely successful day in Clanwilliam as the club held the Johnny Lonergan Memorial Festival of Rugby.

Johnny sadly passed away in February, and he was a lifelong supporter of Clanwilliam.

In his role as a teacher in St Ailbes School, Johnny always encouraged his students to get involved in sports and rugby in particular, and we have no doubt he played a massive part in bringing so many players through our gates In Clanwilliam.

There was no better way to remember Johnny Lonergan than seeing the pitch full with young people playing rugby, and hundreds of pupils from primary schools in Tipperary Town and surrounding areas travelled to Clanwilliam on what was a lovely Spring morning.

All the schools should be very proud of the boys and girls who represented their schools with such good behaviour and great manners. A trophy in memory of our past President Johnny Lonergan was awarded to the team that displayed the essential characteristics of rugby that include respect, teamwork, positive attitude and sportsmanship.

The Johnny Lonergan Memorial Trophy was presented to Bansha National School by Johnny’s sister Mary Donovan.

Special thanks to Ivor Wilkinson and all the club volunteers who helped organise what was a truly fantastic event. Special mention too, for the Transition Year students from The Abbey School Tipperary, who were a huge help on the day, very much appreciated.
